Cranberry juice extracts contain tannins that prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract, bladder and kidney walls. Although beneficial for mild cases, cranberry extract is not a substitute for antibiotics during acute infections. It may help, however, when used in conjunction with traditional medicine or as a preventative. Cranberry Extract Research: Several studies have examined the effect of cranberry extracts on patients with urinary tract infections. One study, published in Nutrition Reviews in 1994, found that cranberry significantly reduced the amount of bacteria in the urine of elderly women compared to patients taking a placebo. Another study, published in the British Medical Journal in 2002, concluded that cranberry juice taken regularly reduces the recurrence of urinary tract infections in women. These studies also show, however, that cranberry extract may not be as beneficial for treating urinary tract infections when the bacteria has already attached to the cells. While cranberries may help expedite the healing process when taken with antibiotics, they are more useful as a preventative. For this reason, it's always best to consult a physician upon suspicion of an infection to find out if traditional medicine should be used before treating with cranberries. How to Take Cranberry Extract: Cranberry extract is most commonly available in pill and capsule form. For use as a preventative for chronic urinary tract infections or for treating mild existing infections, most manufacturers recommend taking 400 to 2400 milligrams (three to six pills or capsules) per day in divided doses. For the best results, always check the product label for exact dosages, as the amount will vary amongst manufacturers. What are the recommended Preparations/Dosages: The dose of cranberry can vary widely in the extract or concentrate of juice consumed. Suggested doses include 400 mg of extract one to four times daily. Consuming cranberry juice several times a day may be beneficial, but caution should be taken after considering the large amount of sugar in commercial juices. Safety and Precautions: Although cranberry extract is believed to be one of the best natural cures for urinary tract infections, very large doses may cause side effects. Never exceed recommended dosages or drink more than three liters of juice per day, or gastrointestinal upsets and diarrhea may occur. Long term use of cranberry extract may also increase the risk of kidney stones because the berries contain high levels of oxalates. Do not take for more than a few weeks at a time.
